| There are
over 2,000 journals with health articles. Most
are targeted to the medical profession and difficult
for someone not trained in the field to comprehend.
Newspapers and weekly magazines have writers who transcribe
the best articles into a form that others can comprehend.
You will notice that health articles you read in newspapers
will commonly reference one of the major journals.
This section lists how you can obtain access to thirty
of these resources. Many can be searched on line.
One of the better journals is the New England Journal
of Medicine. They charge for internet access to
current articles but articles over six months old are
free online.
In addition to the
select journals I have listed other sites you can search
on line.
Some hospitals
have excellent online heath article search capabilities.
Harvard has a good informational site. Go to their
site, type in your topic of interest and review the
articles. Harvard
online site:
The
National Library of Medicine has over 15 million
health articles. This is an excellent resource on every health topic.
Another great resource also from the National
Library of Medicine is Health
Services/Technology Assessment Test. This is a web
based resource of full text documents that provide health
information.
The U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services National Guidelines
Clearinghouse has guidelines on 1327 disease issues.
You can search by disease. They collect issues from all over the world. They are updated daily.
Patient
Inform
This is a web site that journals and health groups
have set up to provide free medical research to consumers.
Presently the site is not very useful as it has limited articles in their files. We expect it will
be developed in the future.
Other Options
Many health journals are available at your
local library; others may only be available at a Medical
School library in you.
At most libraries you can
tie into a service libraries subscribe to called First
Search . Over 9,000 libraries worldwide
subscribe to the service. First Search
has a section called WorldCat that you can
search for health issues. The data base is overwhelming.
It is easy to use but I suggest asking a librarian to
help with your first search.
We have listed the number of libraries
in the table below carrying the resource to indicate
the likelihood of your local library having it.
For example the European Respiratory Journal, with 229
libraries carrying it, would only be carried at Major
University Hospital libraries; while the New England
Journal of Medicine, with 3,945 libraries carrying it,
is at many local libraries.
To find the closest location carrying
the journal you are interested in, call or visit your
local library. As indicated above over 9,000 libraries
worldwide subscribe to a service called First
Search. This service has a section
called WorldCat that will tell you the local
sources for the publication you are interested in.
A librarian can do a search for you to find the closest
local library carrying the journal in seconds.
You can
search some journals and purchase articles online. This
list provides the link, if available, along with the
cost. Please note a number of journals can only
be accessed from a library that has a subscription
